Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. They also boost extra bonuses like crit chance and PvE damage.

For instance an item with the upgrade template ending in % will gain an attack damage of 3% each time it is upgraded (relative to its previous value).

The cost for upgrading items increases when they reach the current level of the item. The cost increases as the level of the item increases.

Components

Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armor and trinkets to give them a stat boost or an extra effect. They can be obtained through crafting, buying from vendors or trading with other players, or looting. Certain upgrades have unique cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can only be applied to equipment with a slot. The item must be upgraded to a blue level before a component can be applied. Upgrade components, unlike other mods, can only be applied once. They cannot be replaced or applied several times. Infusions and Enrichments are a type of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and ascending equipment, as in some items that aren't ascended. Infusions and enrichments can be retrieved by salvaging ascended gear or by completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix may be added to an upgrade, which alters the name of the item it's applied to (for example 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' becomes Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost an item's Mark Level, or Rarity, which allows players to create stronger versions of the equipment using less Upgrade Crystals than are required to achieve the same level of upgrade through normal methods.

A 'boost upgrade' can alter the defense or attack properties of a weapon, or armor. These upgrades can be crafted from the Portative Forging Station once the player completes the cutscene and defeats the Crazed Mechanic. These upgrades can be obtained by purchasing them from the cash shop, or by getting them from enemies while upgrading other gear.

The player can get a maximum of five boost upgrades at a time; each upgrade increases the likelihood that a higher-level version of the item upgrader kit will be available in the next reset. This gives players a reason to upgrade their gear, even when they're not sure what can be improved upon an update.

The boost upgrade may be successful or not, the process could be costly, and there is a substantial possibility that the item will be obsolete or even break when it fails; a failure to upgrade items can cause the destruction of the Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder, as well as the upgraded item. This is mitigated by the availability of cash shop items to increase or even eliminate the chances of failure, as well as some upgrades that offer an additional benefit when they are inserted into an item.

Glyphs

Most of the upgrades in the game can be replaced, but Glyphs are the only upgrade component that can be removed and re-placed without restrictions. Only legendary equipment can be salvaged and re-placed by using a Black Lion Salvage Kit.

The value of each Glyph is displayed when you select it from your inventory. You can choose to replace it with a Glyph of the same rank or higher rank, which will boost the value of the glyph.

You can find Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of the Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain unlimited-use gathering tools and also through Faction Crypt raids. Every Faction Crypt has the possibility of dropping one of the many Glyphs, and there are some rare glyphs to be found as drops from any of the four Faction Crypts.

Once you have the desired Glyphs, you will have to put them on your gear. Each Glyph will unlock a unique bonus that will boost a particular set of stat nodes within a radius around the Glyph. It can be +40 for one of your primary stats, or +25 for two of your secondary stats based on the Glyph.

Utilizing a Glyph will boost all the nodes connected to it, and it is recommended to position your Glyphs near key nodes on the Graph to maximize the impact. Druids, for instance should position their Glyphs close to their primary damage nodes. They may also want to consider placing them near their most critical damage nodes.

Leveling

The upgrade system for items allows players to increase the effectiveness of specific items by putting upgraded components inside them. This is often referred to as "upping". Each upgradeable item is assigned an amount that determines the final statistics. Upgraded items may be leveled up to a maximum level of 385. Each item level requires a different number of components to be reached and the costs for upgrading increase as the item upgrade is leveled up.

Some upgrades require an ingredient to be activated. This ingredient is obtained by the completion of Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be found in the upgrade tab of a crafting table or purchased from some NPCs. Each Upgrade Recipe that is completed results in a certain amount of Technology points. These points can be used to upgrade the item. Once enough are earned, the upgrade can be claimed and its additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When a player upgrades an item to a higher level, the original item upgrades is replaced with a different item of the same type. The same armor can be transformed into the form of a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item also comes with its own set of bonuses. This could be a drawback since the item may become more expensive even if you do not require it.

Item upgrades can sometimes be rerolled, if the player has enough reroll tokens to do so.
