Upgrades to an item are a way to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade you choose, it may increase the rarity of an item or mark Level, and also boost other stats.

Using the item level can help players evaluate the potency of gear when deciding to purchase or sell. It's an indicator of the item's condition and its quality. The level of an item can be used to evaluate items when examining the inventory of a vendor.

The level of the item can be seen by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the full description of the item, as well as its value. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are several theories about how the level of an item is calculated. One theory is that the item level is a number derived from a formula that calculates the value of an item's stats are worth. In addition to the possibility of rerolling affixes, players may also choose which of the available stats to keep on an item when it is upgraded. The stat ranges are determined by the item's level. However every item will contain at least one stat within that range unless they are a unique item or the item is a God Roll from a boss in a raid.

Another thing that could change is the option to upgrade equipment without having to roll the attachments, or pick which stats to increase. But as with base equipment, this would need to be performed on a per-item basis and the interface for comparing items would not display all the possible stats either lost or gained at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player increases the probability of obtaining items as well as the properties created by loot and the strength of these properties. It does not, however directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It provides players with an opportunity to get better gear earlier in the game. This is particularly beneficial for early game runs, since players tend to prioritize defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chances of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This isn't to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading, which increase with each item level. They can also be enhanced by using anti-materials such as the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, armor, and shields can be created or spawned by using the Luck property, which has a default value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on their material type) to add another 40 luck or to increase the luck of the item to 140.

Certain items, like the weapon that is infused with hollow can also be crafted to increase the damage of any ability that causes damage by five percent. These items are available in the shop or crafted using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades work. However, there are cash shop items which allow players to increase their chance of success or stop them from losing an item in the event that the upgrade is unsuccessful.

The rate of success of an upgrade can be seen in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successful upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special materials. There are limitations on the extent to which success rates can be increased and the probability of a failed upgrade cannot be greater than 100%..

The luck of an item may influence the effectiveness of an upgrade. All items have a success rate of 25 percent and each item that has Luck increases the chance of success by 5percent.

The upgrade overlays for items are displayed above items in the inventory. This can cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects.
